what to do in January
fundraising for Ukraine, photography from Ukraine and film screenings about Ukraine
Dear all,
As the new year starts, so does the every day stress and a busy social calendar. The amount of events to visit can be truly overwhelming. Let me help you out with that and pre-select some especially interesting and worth-to-visit happenings in Berlin.
So, looking for something to do in January? Have some spare time to spend in Berlin? Wanna learn more on Ukraine (offline or online?) Here’s what you should consider doing:
📸 Fundraising event: Poster sale and photo show on Friday, 20th of January
This Friday you can start the weekend by supporting Ukraine and enjoy a drink, music and photography at Between Bridges Foundation in Kreuzberg. In purchasing a poster and donating you’ll support different groups fighting against the consequences of the russian full-scale invasion:
“All money raised goes to @kyivangels (humanitarian aid for those in need, e.g. in areas not far from or directly on the front), @livyjbereh (reconstruction/repair of houses destroyed in russian attacks) and @tu_mariupol (a cultural initiative that turned into a charity fond evacuating Mariupol residents and working with displaced young people from Mariupol)”.
🎥 Hamlet-Syndrom Screenings at Kino Krokodil: to be or not to be in Ukraine
The documentary Hamlet-Syndrom, “a many-layered, dense portrait of a torn and yet powerful Ukrainian generation who, due to the Russian invasion, find themselves at war again, only a few months after their production premiered”, will run daily in Kino Krokodil for the rest of January. On Thursday you’ll have the chance to listen to the directors Elwira Niewiera and Piotr Rosołowski discuss their movie.
Synopsis: “Five young people from Ukraine talk about their lives after the Maidan Revolution of 2014. Not all of them fought in the Russian-Ukrainian war, but the war, however, shattered their life plans. Representing “Generation Maidan”, they face the question of how to cope with experiences of violence, how to go on. Theatre director Roza Sarkisian produces a Hamlet adaptation with them in which they can use Shakespeare’s tragic character as a mirror and face their traumas on stage again.”
In case you do not live in Berlin, a quick Google Search will help you find screenings in your city or around you.
📸 Kyiv Emerging: Photography Exhibition
In Kommunale Galerie Berlin you’ll have the chance to visit a photography group exhibition showing pictures of Kyiv’s resilience and beauty by Ukrainian photographers. The pictures vary from documentary, empathetic to conceptual visual language. You can visit the exhibition until 12th of March, the opening is today in the evening.
Lecture: Making of Modern Ukraine by Timothy Snyder
In case you do not live in Berlin or do not have the possibility to visit the events, you can still learn about Ukraine in an interesting and entertaining way. The Yale lecture on the Making of Modern Ukraine held by Timothy Snyder is available on Youtube and as a podcast, giving you a broad overview of the history Ukraine and the region of Eastern Europe.
I hope you can make use of the recommendations and learn more about Ukraine, while celebrating Ukrainian culture. Let me know if you stumbled over any other noteworthy events, films or educational material. I’d appreciate if you give this post a like and share it with a friend or colleague.
Lots of love
