What's on my desk in September
How to support Ukrainian charities and first ideas for reconstruction. Oh, and of course, movies to watch this month.
Dear all,
The past and upcoming weeks of my life are mostly preoccupied with writing. Not only for Substack, but also for universitiy: I am about to finish my papers about the Powstanie Warszawskie, gender, linguistics and film before going on an academic trip to Poland on the topic of Balticness, which I look forward to a lot and will keep you updated about.
What have you been up to the past weeks? What are your plans for autumn?
3 ways to support Ukrainian charities in buying fashion
Summer is coming to an end and the difficult question of energy supply is bothering us all. Covid discussions are in season again. In the midst of it all it is important for us to keep our solidarity with Ukraine visible. Have you considered showing your solidarity via fashion? Here are three possibilities on where to shop and donate at the same time.
🥒 Pickles - Shirt by @krise_loves_you
This super cool collection of shirts tells the story of a grandmother, who destroyed a drone by throwing a can of pickled vegetables at it. Naturally, her story has gone viral and can now be worn. All the profits are donated: “The profit goes 100% to @irinsymchych. Iryna is a private person from Ivano Frankivsk who collects money and distributes it directly where it is needed (initial equipment for volunteer soldiers, for example). Iryna has our full confidence!”
🚲 UЮА ВЕЛОСПОРТ Merch by @uuavelosport
A bicycle named "Ukraina" was produced in Kharkiv in 1960. Since then, this model has become a cult in Ukrainian villages. Now, paying tribute to the iconic bicycle, we can buy merchandise with its logo. The profits are used for a supportable cause: “50% of profit will be donated to our friends volunteers (@varyalushchyk @livyj_bereh) who bring help to the deoccupied territories. Now they are focused on restoring houses in the North of Ukraine.”
👚 print shirts by @chatascopalaje
A designer from Hannover is selling shirts and items from diverse Ukrainian artist, in order to collect money for “those who are busy on the frontline and in cities in humanitarian crisis”. Check out the really cool printed shirts they have, my favorites are the ones referencing the Nike and IKEA Logo.

🇺🇦 Testament of Bucha Installation
The exhibition "Testament of Bucha" documents war crimes against civilians in Bucha and in the occupied territories of Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Kyiv in Ukraine at George-Grosz-Platz in Charlottenburg. You can visit the outdoor installation, centering a burned and damaged car in which civilians tried to flee, until 15th of September.
As usual, you should definetly find some time to go to the cinema in the next weeks. Kino Krokodil is offering exciting documentary screenings for you:
Sep 14th: Mariupolis 2 - a documentary about the city of Mariupol and how the inhabitants are affected by russia’s war. Part two of the documentary Mariupolis, both made by director Mantas Kvedaravičius, who was shot by a russian soldier during his work on the second movie in Mariupol.
Sep 15th: Courage - a documentary following three members of the Belarus Free Theatre and how they get involved in the oppositional protests in Belarus in 2020. After the screening, you’ll have the chance to meet and discuss the movie with the director Aliaksei Paluyan.
