July #1 - On Ukraine and on Trains.
Shorts, Kakhovka Dam, Pastries and Techno-Fundraising in Berlin.
Dear all,
I am writing today from a PKP train (Polish Deutsche Bahn) floor, sitting in front of the train-toilet and treating this as a reminder to ALWAYS make sure to have reservation for Polish trains! I am on my way to Opener, the biggest Polish music festival - let’s call it Feldforschung ;)
Igor from Handpicked Berlin allowed me to share three tips with his readers in a recent edition of his newsletter! I recommended:
🎞️ The film GREEN BORDER - Agnieszka Hollands drama on Belarusian-Polish border crisis, which is available for streaming on Amazon Prime
🇺🇦 “The Making of Modern Ukraine” - A history lecture by Timothy Snyder, held in Yale in autumn 2022
🚃 and to take a weekend trip with Kulturzug - read more about this one below :)
Find the said newsletter issue here and make sure to subscribe for handpicked news of Berlin’s tech scene and so much more :)

So, let’s dive right in!
🎞️ Short Film Program "Kyiv in focus - 4 stories, 1 city"
Carefully curated by a group of East European Studies Students (including myself) we are inviting to a short film screening at Kino Central. Four perspectives on the urban space together create a mosaic of Kyiv:
“What connects them all is always the question of home: It is about how to live and where to live but also when to leave.” - Lucian, my class mate, has summarized the nature of the program perfectly.
Our program includes:
Beautiful Playgrounds (Paul Graneck, 2016)
Landslide (Oleksiy Radynski, 2016)
Goodbye Golovin (Mathieu Grimard, 2018)
I stumble every time I hear from Kyiv (Dararyna Mamaisur, 2022)
I hope to see you there! <3

💬 People in the Shadow of Environmental Destruction
A year ago, the Kachovka dam in southern Ukraine was destroyed by russian troops. A terrible rupture in the war with massive consequences for people, nature and infrastructure. How are the people and the region coping? Libereco is hosting a discussion with two experts - Iryna Babanina (environmental scientist, Conflict and Environment Observatory) and Oksana Mikheieva (historian and sociologist, ZOiS) - who will give us an understanding of the extent of the destruction and future scenarios. The discussion is being organized by my friend Katarina and her project group as part of the Eastern European Studies programme. Find out more.

🚂 Kulturzug Berlin - Wroclaw
On this trip, the journey to Poland begins already with boarding the train at Berlin Ostkreuz: The „Kulturzug“ is not just a train that goes from city to city, but one that connects people by its intercutural concept. A team of moderators provides a cultural program on board, that is updated every week - it features concerts, language classes, etc. It operates over the weekend, to bring people to Wroclaw, a colorful, beautiful city that a lot of Poles consider to be their favourite one, as I have observed - only 350km from Berlin. Find out about schedule, program and tickets here.
Speaking of trains, a seating update: A truly friendly Pani Konduktor made me a reservation (dziękuję <3) , but I was argued out of it just some minutes after sitting down. After a little more floor time, I can now enjoy this lovely view - knowing that any minute I could lose it again! PKP and me - an on-going love-hate relationship.
Thank you for reading and stay tuned for the next issue coming in two weeks!
